Users and Groups

I could sure use some guidance with this. I have two folders that I want to control access to and I'm having a very difficult time. Both of them have index files in them, so not displaying folder contents is not the problem.

I set up two groups, users and XXX. I assigned users to folder1. Users has two names in it, and access control works great up to the point where I assign XXX to folder2. XXX has one username that is also in the User group. Once I make those assignments, folder 2 will not accept the username assigned after asking 6 times, and folder one quits asking.

Got any suggestions at all?

From what I read in your message, you have successfully created a username that is in two different groups. From what I recall, that's not supposed to be possible, unless they have different letter case or are spelled differently. I would suspect that if you actually do have the exact same username in two or more groups, that only one will actually function and the other(s) will act as though they don't exist. I guess my point here is that you're not supposed to be able to create the same username in multple groups and so it would be understandable that it might not work.

My suggestion is that you only have that second username in the XXX group (if that's the more privileged group) and specify in the Users and Groups of folder1 that username. In other words, you would have two groups, each with varying levels of privilege; and folder1 would have both group one and the user from the XXX group (or the whole XXX group) in it, while folder two would only have the XXX group in it. (when I say "in it", I mean chosen as permitted to access it) This would permit both groups to access folder1, and permit only users from the XXX group to access folder2.
